What is a smart alarm?

A smart alarm is a wireless version of a traditional burglar alarm that uses your home wifi network to connect the different components of the alarm, rather than wires. Just like a traditional alarm system, it’s made up of a siren that will trigger when any of the sensors are activated.

The two most popular types of sensors are open/close and PIR. Open/close sensors should be placed on windows or doors. They’re made up of two parts that form a connection when the door or window is closed. If the connection is broken, because the door or window has been opened and the alarm is armed, the siren will trigger.

PIR sensors detect motion and should be positioned in a hallway or other rooms that have an entry point to your home. Again, if the alarm is armed and the sensor detects motion, the siren will sound.

Some smart alarms include or can be used with wifi security cameras from the same manufacturer. Not only do these act as motion sensors but they allow you to see what’s happening in your home if the alarm has been triggered, so you’ll know if it’s a false alarm or a genuine emergency.

Unlike traditional burglar alarms, which have a control panel (usually situated in the entrance hall) that is used to arm and disarm the alarm and alert you if any sensors have been triggered, smart alarms are controlled from a smartphone app. The app lets you arm and disarm the alarm, even if you’ve already left home, and notifies you if any of the sensors have been triggered, rather than getting home to discover your siren has been sounding all afternoon (and potentially annoying your neighbours). However, smart alarms do require a hub that allows the different components to wirelessly connect. But for most smart alarms this hub can be placed anywhere in your home.

Why not simply lock the doors?

One option, of course, is to lock the doors at all times, especially when sleeping with a lock that has a specific key or number combination unknown to your loved one.

However, in the case of a fire hazard, this can be dangerous, as they may not be able to escape in time.

It is also possible that they might take offence to such constant scrutiny, especially if this practice is implemented during the day as well. It is important that patients suffering from dementia should be allowed to maintain their dignity

What is a “door alarm”?

A door alarm is a device which detects when a door is opened and alerts others in the house/area that someone has left the house. Usually, it consists of a device mounted on the door which is integrated with an alarm or a chime that is loud enough to be heard from a distance.

Advanced options also include remote-controlled operation, remote alarm (which is not played at the door, but instead somewhere the caregiver or family member can hear it.

Some alarms are also combined with remote-sensor wrist bands that can be put on the person that needs to be tracked. This way an alarm is raised only if the person that needs to be tracked leaves the house, instead of doing it every time anyone leaves.

What are the various types of door alarms?

String alarm

A string alarm is just that – a string, connecting the door and the door frame by a magnet. When the door opens, it causes the string to detach, thus sounding an alarm. To stop the alarm, simply reconnect the magnet back in its original position.

Passive InfraRed (PIR) alarms

A PIR sensor can detect changes in the infrared radiation being emitted by an object upon it. The PIR alarm uses this technology to check if the plane across the door is changing, and raises an alarm when this plane is broken.

The great thing about PIR alarms is that they can detect a person leaving from the door even if the door is currently open. Since the technology only looks at the plane of the door and detects heat signatures in that plane, a hot body entering the plane is registered whether or not the door itself is in place. Thus an alarm is raised every time someone passes through the frame of the door.

Magnetic door alarms

A magnetic door alarm is nothing but two sensors containing magnets, one on the door and the other on the door frame, in close contact with each other.

As long as the two magnets are in each other’s presence (not more than 10-15mm apart), the alarm will remain inert. As soon as the door is opened, the connection between the two magnets is lost and an alarm is raised, and it can be reset only when the two magnets are connected back to each other.

Floor sensor alarms

Floor sensor alarms use a combination of weight sensing floor mats and door alarms. When your loved one stands on the mat, the change in weight is registered and an alarm is raised.

Floor sensor alarms can be preset to either alarm immediately or to allow a small time for the person to exit and return before sounding. Since they are pressure sensitive and not dependant on the door per se, they can be used to curb wandering at the bedside itself and can warn caregivers that much earlier.

Remote sounding alarms

If you do not wish to startle the person with dementia who is opening a door, you can use a remote sounding alarm which will sound near the caregiver instead of at the door.

These alarms typically have two parts: a transmitter which is connected to the door and is activated when it is opened, and a receiver which is placed near the caregiver and is connected with the alarm.

In the event of your loved one wandering out, the transmitter will send a signal to the receiver which will activate the alarm, thus waking up the caregiver.

Keypad locks

Keypad locks require a degree of awareness to unlock (since the combination has to be entered by hand). Therefore they can be used to prevent your loved one from wandering out.

Since keypad locks can be connected to a fire alarm/smoke detector, they aren’t a threat in case of fire, which is the problem with normal locks.

GPS alert systems

GPS is a technology used for tracking and locating things. A GPS alert system can be included in many things – even small ones like shoes, watches or bracelets. It is possible to track when a person breaches a perimeter (say 50 metres) from the house, or else you can simply track continuously.

Below are our top picks for Dementia Wandering Door Alarms.

How do the Wireless Doorbells & Monitors Work

1. The transmitter- mounted on the door and door frame with double-sided tape or screws (included with the products we tested). You need to make sure the door monitor transmitter and its side magnet are placed correctly (no more than 1/4 inch apart and properly lined up) or the product will not work.

2. The remote receiver, which provides an alert to the caregiver- this is plugged into a chosen location or carried with you, depending on the model.

When a monitored door is opened, the transmitter sends a signal to the receiver which provides an alert. You can purchase extra door transmitters for areas of the home that may also need monitoring, like the basement stairs and the front and back doors. You can also use these monitors on a refrigerator door, medicine cabinet, or kitchen cabinet door.

Main differences among the models:

  • Volume control and type of alert (chime, alarm or vibration)
  • Transmission range from the door to your receiver (75 to 150 feet)
  • How the alert is turned off (automatically or manually at the door)
  • Plug-in or portable (battery-operated) receiver for caregiver alerts.

An alert may allow you to get to the person’s side in time to accompany them outside or redirect the person from leaving home to another activity. Be sure to test the limits before depending on the device!

Make sure to check the transmission range (between the door and the receiver) may be lower than stated by the manufacturer, depending on the wall thickness and other environmental interference.

Also you should be aware that the alerts take one or two seconds to sound after the door has opened, depending on the model and the type of alert chosen. If the person is in a rush to get out the door, this type of alert may not give you enough advance notice.

Often times there are no low battery warnings on the door transmitter part and the batteries may need to be changed every few months, depending on use (see manufacturer’s instructions). You’ll need to check often to make sure the unit is working and not rely solely on this device to keep a person from wandering (or other unsafe activities).

Door Alarms for Alzheimer and Dementia Patients

As we all know, keeping an eye on a Alzheimer or dementia sufferer can be a daunting task. The danger that they wander out of the door and get lost is always there. That is why it is crucial you get to know the care receiver’s habits as they are all different.

Some people like to go wandering after they read their morning newspaper, others do so after they have had their dinner. Often times those habits are so ingrained in their previous lives that they will be impossible to change.

This is where the door alarms come in. They can be helpful in keeping  the track on your loved one. You may want to use this product along others, e.g., high and/or low sliding locks or a standard chain lock installed high or low. A chain lock may give you more time to get to the door, as the alert will sound when the door is partially opened, but the chain lock must be removed before they can exit.

These systems are not fail-proof and may not always work (even with charged batteries), so use multiple strategies when trying to prevent falls or wandering.

Below you’ll find door monitors that we’ve tested along with specific Pros and Cons for each product. We only tested products that offer a remote alert option, as alerts that only sound at the door can be upsetting to individuals with dementia.

You can also use motion sensors near the door to monitor the activity of the person you care for.

How we test

The Good Housekeeping Institute assesses the performance, ease of use and design of each smart alarm system. We test the simplicity and ease of installation and evaluate the accuracy of any motion and open/close sensors. We look at how clear and loud the siren is and whether notifications are sent in a timely fashion.

We also consider how simple the system is to arm and disarm and whether it’s possible to customise which sensors are activated at different times, to see if it’s suitable for use when you’re at home as well as away from the property.

Conclusion

Shed and garage burglaries are not unheard of, especially when they contain expensive garden tools, bikes, and other equipment. It is also common for burglars to target the sheds or garages of multiple homes in the same neighborhood, yet many homeowners do not realize the importance of getting a shed alarm system to keep their belongings safe.

If you own valuable lawn equipment or are a handyman who values power tools and other essentials, then getting yourself a good shed alarm system is going to be a wise choice. To make your life easier, we have combed the internet and have listed the 9 best shed alarm systems for your home.
