What is an evaporative cooler?

An evaporative cooler or a swamp cooler is a device that adds moisture to dry air and cools down its surroundings using evaporation. Evaporative coolers give the best results when lowering temperatures in hot and dry climates. The dry air absorbs the cool moisture, leading to cooler temperatures in the room.

This is why they are super popular in places that have dry, arid weather conditions, like the desert climates of the southwestern United States.

It is important to note that despite being called swamp coolers, these coolers aren’t the best choice for lowering temperatures in places with high humidity, like swamps.

This is because humid conditions can make it difficult for moisture to evaporate fast enough to cool air effectively. Also, adding more moisture to the already moisture laden air will make the room feel quite sticky and suffocating. In such areas, air conditioners do a better job as they dehumidify the air while cooling it too.

How do evaporative coolers work?

Remember when on a typically hot day you try to lower your body temperature by rubbing some ice cold water on your skin? Well, an evaporative cooler works in pretty much the same fashion.

Most evaporative cooler designs make use of evaporation’s natural ability to lower air temperature and use water-soaked filter pads to cool the air.

Every evaporative cooler comes with a fan that pulls hot air into the unit and sends it through the filter pads located at the back or sides or both places, which helps evaporate the liquid into gas. This cool air then blows out bringing down the temperature of the room effectively.

The best evaporative coolers are able to provide the largest surface area over which the hot air can travel and evaporate the water. It is important, therefore, for the unit to suck in maximum hot air and pass it over a larger moist area in order to deliver the best results.

Remember that while evaporative coolers are a super effective, economical as well as environment-friendly way of cooling your surroundings, it is not advisable to use them in small, closed and unventilated rooms. This is because they constantly require a flow of fresh air to function properly.

How are evaporative coolers different from air conditioners?

The biggest difference between an air conditioner and an evaporative cooler is that while the former is a default dehumidifier, the latter achieves its goal of cooling the air through injecting humidity. This is why evaporator coolers are an ideal choice if you’re living in dry, desert-like surroundings while air cons are perfect for both dry as well as humid, swampy climates.

Further, air conditioners provide ‘refrigerant air’ and use vapor-compression to cool air while evaporative coolers provide ‘cooled air’ through evaporation’s natural ability to lower air temperature using just water and a fan.

Evaporative coolers also do not have exhaust hoses or outside condenser boxes and can be used outdoors too as opposed to air conditioners which only work effectively in closed spaces as they absorb heat and moisture from indoor air and release it outside.

And of course, evaporation coolers are much more environment-friendly, easier to maintain and economical than air conditioners.

Types of evaporative coolers:

There are many types of evaporative coolers available in the market to choose from. Some are portable while others need to be mounted on the wall, some blow cool air directly into the room while others need a duct system to transfer air to multiple locations.

Broadly, they can be classified into three categories-

Direct evaporative coolers or swamp coolers are super easy to maintain, inexpensive and extremely energy efficient. They are portable and do not require any kind of installation. Just plug them into the power source and get ready for some seriously cool air.

You need to fill its tank with water and from there on, the machine uses the natural process of evaporative cooling to bring down temperature. The hot air is sucked in through fan, used to evaporate water on the surface area of the pads and the resulting cool air is then pushed out again through the fan.

Indirect evaporative coolers are quite different from direct ones although their basic working technique is quite similar. Firstly, they are not portable due to their size. Secondly, they don’t add humidity to the air like swamp coolers.

Indirect evaporative cooling takes advantage of the fact that evaporative cooling depends to a large extent on the temperature of the outside air. Therefore, indirect evaporative coolers do not just use the outside air, but also air from an additional air source that is heated before it reaches the filter pads.

As a result, these machines are able to generate more cool air and work exceptionally well in large spaces. Hence, they are becoming increasingly popular as cooling systems in homes, offices and other commercial spaces like restaurants and factories.

Mounted coolers or draft coolers are a trade-off between direct and indirect evaporative coolers. While they are usually bigger in size than direct evaporative coolers, their method of operating is quite similar.

These coolers can be mounted in three ways-

Ground mounting – Not a very popular choice, ground mounted coolers are not considered very efficient as they release cold air close to the ground. Now it is a known fact that cold air falls and hot air rises, so releasing cold air so close to the floor doesn’t make much sense.

Window mounting – Window mounted coolers are quite popular when it comes to small spaces. Since these coolers have access to fresh air on a continued basis, they work very effectively.

Roof mounting – Roof mounted evaporative coolers are more popular in industrial settings. They work with ducts that help to distribute cooled air. These coolers are quite expensive and their cost of maintenance is high too.

Important points to consider before choosing an evaporative cooler:

Size of your home

It is very important to consider the size of the area you want cooled when buying an evaporative cooler. An evaporative water cooler that is too small for your area will have to work extra hard to keep the space cool, wasting energy.

Personal needs

If you are looking for a cooling that option that is not just effective but energy efficient and environment-friendly too, buying an evaporative cooler is undoubtedly the best idea.

Geographic location

As mentioned above, swamp coolers work best in dry, arid climates. So if you live in an area with humid, swamp-like conditions, consider buying an air conditioner instead.

Budget

Evaporative coolers are much cheaper than air conditioners and also require very less maintenance comparatively – even the industrial ones.

So now that you have a fair idea of what evaporative coolers are and how they work, let us look at one of the best evaporative coolers available in the market.

How To Select A Good Evaporative Air Cooler?

Buying a good air cooler makes the summers easy and comfortable. You must be wondering which air cooler is best for you, isn’t it? Don’t worry we have your answers with us, just go through the following factors you should consider while buying your air cooler and you will end up deciding the right features you want in your air cooler:

1. Effective Area of Cooling:

Always read the cooling area specification written on model description. It will ensure that cooler you are buying is sufficient to cool your required area.

Like for cooling garages, workshops or halls you need larger cooling area cooler while for a smaller or average sized room a low cooling area cooler will work.

Also keep in mind that cooling area of cooler you are buying must be greater than or equal to area you want to cool.

2. Cooling Pads Used:

When water wets the cooling pads and air is passed through it the cold water absorbs heat from air and makes it cool and cooler then delivers you the cold air. So, there are two cooling pads available in the market:

  • Honey Comb cooling pad:

They are high density cooling pads, made of cellulose and look like a honey comb in structure. They provide more cooling compared to other cooling pads available. They are highly efficient and durable but expensive in cost.

  • Aspen or wood wool cooling pads:

They look like grasses in structure and provide less cooling as compared to honey comb cooling pads. They are economic in cost but less durable and less efficient.

3. Power Consumption by Air Cooler:

Initial cost of air cooler is one-time expenditure, but the running cost of cooler is lifetime expenditure and matters a lot.

So, if you come across two same features air coolers but different power ratings, always go with one which consumes less power irrespective of their prices.

However, area you want to cool also decides power consumption as power consumption of cooler increases with increase in cooling area of cooler.

4. Water Tank Capacity:

As the area you want to cool increases the required water tank size also increases. Hence, selecting the cooler with required tank capacity will prevent you getting tired from filling the water tank frequently.

5. Water Level Indicator And Empty Tank Alarm:

Water level indicator tells you the amount of water present in the cooler. As it reaches the minimum level the empty tank alarm notifies you to fill the tank again with water.

This feature saves motor of the cooler from getting damage on running water free. However, addition of these two features makes the cooler more costly.

6. Speed Control NOB:

Generally, all the air coolers have this feature. This allows you to regulate the flow of air you want by increasing or decreasing the speed of fan. Three speeds on which cooler runs are low, medium and high speed.

7. Remote Control Feature:

If you remain too busy and can’t get to your cooler every time you wish to change its setting. Then this is the right feature for you as it allows you to control your cooler from the distance with the help of a remote just like you control your AC or TV. However, addition of this feature increases the cost of air cooler.

8. Air Swing Delivery System:

This feature ensures the reach of air blown by cooler in all the directions of your room. Air cooler comes with oscillation of 40°, 70°, 120° etc. and as the degree of oscillation increases the range of air blown also increases.

If you have a large room or area to cool buy the cooler with higher degree of oscillation.

9. Timer Function:

The timer function allows you to program your cooler for uninterrupted running. And when the set time is reached it automatically gets switch-off.

Coolers come with maximum timer function of 15hrs or 7.5hrs, you can select the one which suits you best. But, coolers with this feature are little expensive.

10. Wheels at Base:

Castor wheels present at base, helps in mobilizing the air coolers easily. And you can cool different areas of your home by mobilizing the cooler to those areas without much effort.

Advantages of Evaporative Air Coolers:

  • Cost effectiveness – Evaporative air coolers cost very less as compared to AC’s but still provide effective cooling.
  • Energy efficient – They use less electricity compared to AC’s, and provide you effective cooling with reduced electricity bill.
  • Eco-friendly – They don’t use harmful refrigerants to provide cooling, they just cool the natural air from atmosphere making it ecofriendly for you and your family.
  • Humidifier – They are great humidifier in dry or semi-arid regions as they increase the moisture content in air they blow.
  • Easily Portable – Wheels present at their base allows you to shift them to your desired area.

DisAdvantages of Evaporative Air Coolers:

  • Less effective in humid areas – Less effective in humid and coastal areas as they cannot add moisture into the air any more.
  • High Maintenance – Motors and fans of the coolers are prone to rust and damage and hence proper maintenance is required.
  • Regular Filling of Tank – Once the water gets empty in the tank, you need to refill it which most people find tiresome to do. The problem gets worse if you live in a drought full area.
  • Noise – The running of motor to blow the air produces lot of sound which may seem noisy and may disturb you.

Some Closing Tips To Consider

As you have gone through our buying guide of evaporative air coolers, what you now need to do is to select from the above features you need in your air cooler. The answer depends upon the climatic conditions you live in, the size or area you want to cool, do you want to shift your cooler regularly, do you need remote control feature and various other features. But as the list of features added keeps increasing, the cost of your cooler will also increase. However, having more features is worthy than having a less feature cooler.

Is it comparable to an AC unit?

No, not by a longshot and it’s where consumers tend to make their biggest mistake. These machines are designed to work in a natural fashion, just like a breeze blowing across a lake on a hot summer day. In short, an evaporative cooler isn’t comparable to an portable air conditioner and won’t keep things a cozy 68 degrees at home regardless of the climate outside.

On a positive note, there are no coolants or compressors to deal with, so evaporative coolers are more eco-friendly and cheaper to run than air conditioners. Some also serve as true 2-in-1 machines with a humidifier or fan function although that’s something you’ll want to take lightly in most cases. While every evaporative cooler acts as a humidifier or fan to a degree, that’s not it’s main purpose.

The area where you’ll use your swamp cooler is also critical as they work better in dry, hot conditions. If you live in the desert or parts of the western United States, they are definitely useful. On the flipside, running an evaporative cooler in a humid location is not ideal unless you enjoy a muggy home.

CFM and Square Footage

If you’re shopping around for an evaporative cooler, the two most significant stats by far are CFM and square footage. While there are other areas of importance, these two specifications give you a starting point.

CFM stands for cubic feet per minute which tells you how much air a machine can move. Every manufacturer with an AC unit, fan or evaporative cooler will list this statistic, but it won’t do you any good unless you know the square footage of the room or area you plan to cool. Thankfully figuring out the square footage of a room is easier than you think.

You simply need to measure the length and width of a room and multiply those numbers to get your square footage. From there, you can check the products square footage ratings to ensure it will cover the area you want to cool.

Types of Evaporative Coolers

You can find a cooler that can handle a room of any size, but our picks will fall into one of two categories with indoor or outdoor evaporative coolers. Some can be used in either location as long as you keep safety and a few other things in mind. That said, there are some key differences between the two.

Coolers built for home use are usually smaller and easy to tote although most still have caster wheels like larger models. They are ideal for cooling small to medium-sized rooms in your home along with spaces like garages. Most are easy to use with consumer-friendly settings, remotes and features like oscillation as well.  Personal evaporative coolers also fall into this category with ratings under 100 CFM.

When it comes to outdoor models, things open up considerably, and your budget is the only limitation. Again, some are small and quiet enough to use indoors or hang from a window, but most of these models are geared to deal with things like UV rays and have large water reservoirs. They also have connections for a water hose and features to ensure the tank never runs dry. If you need to cool off a large patio, workshop or just want to cool the family when you fire up the grill, this style is your best bet.

There are whole house evaporative coolers as well, but that’s not something we’re going to touch on this time around. You’ll generally need a professional to install these units when roofs or ductwork is involved.

The More You Know….

Knowing your square footage and the CFM rating you need is only half the battle if you want the best evaporative cooler. Here are a few other areas that will narrow the field and may help make your buying decision easier.

  • Water Tank – Whether you’re buying an evaporative cooler built for your living room or a barn, it’s going to need water, and every machine has a tank. With indoor units, it’s also an area where refilling comes into play as you’ll need to top off that tank eventually. Outdoor models will have hose attachments and can generally take care of themselves.
  • Cooling Pads – Some companies refer to these as “media” pads, but a cooling pad is what adds moisture to the mix. Larger pads are nice, but what they’re made from is more important with cellulose and wood being the top options. You also have to consider how often they need to be replaced as some of the more exotic options are quite pricey.
  • Decibel Level – If running your evaporative cooler outdoors, this rating shouldn’t matter but don’t overlook it if you’re purchasing a smaller unit. The dBA rating can be difficult to find on some products, but lets you know how loud the cooler will be. As an example, an average vacuum cleaner is around 70dBA while a fridge can clock in at 50dBA.

Evaporative Cooler Features

By design, evaporative coolers are simple considering they use nature’s natural cooling process with a little tech thrown in to move things along. That means there aren’t many features you’ll need to consider aside from a few basics. You’ll also find more creature comforts on indoor models than you will on evaporators built for decks or warehouses.

When you’re looking through tech specs, keep in mind that the CFM rating is for full speed and most evaporators have multiple settings. Three are common with low, medium and high although a few household models have some unique options as well. Oscillation is another feature that’s standard on indoor units, but you may have to manually move those louvers on coolers geared towards the outdoors.

Water level indicators are something you’ll always want to keep an eye out for but are usually standard. Lights and alarms are ideal, but a simple gauge can do the trick just as well. Remote controls aren’t nearly as prevalent as they should be and we feel the same way about ice compartments.

Warranty

If you’re running a machine that uses water and electricity for hours on end, it’s good to think about the warranty beforehand. Unfortunately, most evaporative coolers have short guarantees, and there’s not a huge gap between brands like you’ll find with other products. It’s a “niche” area, which makes a good warranty all the more important.

With an evaporative cooler, there aren’t many moving parts, but there are several things that can break, leak or rust. If an extended warranty is an option, it is something you should consider as even the smaller coolers aren’t exactly cheap.

Conclusion

As you have gone through our buying guide of evaporative air coolers, what you now need to do is to select from the above features you need in your air cooler. The answer depends upon the climatic conditions you live in, the size or area you want to cool, do you want to shift your cooler regularly, do you need remote control feature and various other features. But as the list of features added keeps increasing, the cost of your cooler will also increase. However, having more features is worthy than having a less feature cooler.

SO, HESSAIRE MC37 is our recommendation to go for because of its strong air flow and large effective cooling area which is greater than any other brand. It also has the largest water tank capacity among all the brands mentioned here which lets it run for long hours and provides you cooling effectively and continuously.
