What Does Pico projector Mean?

Pico projector is a highly compact and lightweight projector that looks like a mini device but performs like any other projector. They come with an ultra-compact form factor that serves as a better alternative to standard projectors in terms of portability.

They are an outcome of modern space-saving technology that is intended for offering flexible projection. Due to their unique design, not only can you carry it in your backpack, but some of them even fit in your pocket. Meaning you can take it anywhere, just like a smartphone, and enjoy entertainment on the go.

Although the size varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but none of the sizes goes beyond the size of a tablet. They mostly utilize micro hardware and modular units to create a mini projection device.

Previously Pico units were mostly utilized in business sectors for presentation purposes. Plus, they used to come with low resolution and a minimal amount of brightness. The advent of modern technology has given rise to numerous ultra-efficient models that are nowadays also used an entertainment device.

Are Mini Projectors Worth It?

Well, if you are in search of a mini and portable projection device that you can take anywhere without worrying about the setup. Then we can say Pico is definitely worth the investment and become your traveling partner.

They are highly-efficient as many of the models run on inbuilt battery, so you just need a video source and screen to set up your projector. Suppose you want to watch a movie on a large screen with your friends while traveling, a Pico projector will serve as a better option.

You can have large-size entertainment without lugging a separate bag for carrying your regular home entertainment projector or laptop.

They are lightweight and easily fits in any space of your backpack; thus making it easy to carry the device. The portability feature also makes them highly useful for presentations in offices and educational institutes.

It also spares you from spending a considerable chunk of money for entertainment or presentation. Most of the Pico devices come with an affordable price tag, so it arrives within reach of a large mass who want performance as well as portability.

However, it is not suitable for users who are particular about the video quality and features. Almost every Pico doesn’t deliver best-in-class visual quality like any high-end models, so it would be futile to expect a cinematic visual experience.

They also lack features and connection facilities, but whatever they offer is entirely sufficient for an excellent experience. In terms of durability, they are quite good, but some of the projectors might not provide you considerable lamp longevity.

But if you are going for LED, you won’t have to worry as they come with plausible lamp hours.

Buying Guide of Pico Projectors

Selecting the best Pico portable projector can be challenging, given the overwhelming choices you get in the market. To help you, let’s take a closer look at the considerations that will guide you to the most appropriate one;

Portability- Even though Pico projectors are highly portable, but different models come with different sizes and designs. Some models will fit in your palm while some of them get the size of a tablet. Some Pico models come with a cylindrical shape that you can store in the water storage area of your backpack. Well, the main point of owning a Pico device is portability, so you should get a size that will fit your requirements.

DLP or LED- Well, when it comes to projection technology in the Pico projector, you will either have to choose DLP or LED. DLP will serve you right if you drool to experience sharp and bright images with excellent contrast at an affordable price. However, with DLP, you will get not only limited resolution choice but also rainbow effects in many scenes.

LED Pico projectors, on the other hand, get high resolution and images that are rich in color. The brightness they offer is more than sufficient for bright and vivid image quality. But they will disappoint you with the shallow black level and low contrast in the videos. Moreover, they are expensive than DLP modes, but for the extra price, you will get an impressive lifespan that tends to go more than 15000hours on average.

Resolution- With the limited size of the Pico projector, you will also be limited to a certain resolution figure.  Even though 4K UHD resolution is the current rage among manufacturers but the 1080p and 720p native resolution are more than sufficient if your priority is entertainment. You can even opt for 600p or 480p resolution if budget is an issue, or you are only getting the projector for presentation purposes.

Brightness and Color- Without a good lumens figure and color accuracy, you can’t expect to have a terrific image quality. In general, the lumens figure between 1000 and 3000 should be your target if you plan to use it in a dark environment. However, if you think that your setup area might have a lot of ambient light, then you should look for 4000 lumens or even more.

However, to get rich color in your images, the Pico unit should have more than 70% color gamut coverage of NTSC or sRGB. It should also have a high amount of displayable color so it can accurately reproduce the color from the content.

Throw Ratio- Typically, Pico projectors don’t come with a really short-throw ratio, but there are few models that might be useful if you space issue. While choosing a model, try to get a low throw ratio around 0.6-1:1 because it will ensure that you will get a large screen from a short distance.

Screen Size- Depending upon your requirement and the number of people you are going to cater will determine the screen size. The settings that you will use in your projector will decide the screen size. The maximum screen size should be minimum 100inch, but you can go for higher.

Battery Life- You will surely won’t love to use a Pico projector that will run out of battery within a few minutes of your movie session or presentation. So emphasize on the battery life, and it should be able to run for a minimum of two hours with a full charge. However, some models can even run for three hours and support external batteries.

Connectivity- When you are getting a Pico projector, you can’t expect it to flaunt a similar amount of connectivity options like a standard projector for apparent reasons.

Most of the Pico model we have across comes with minimum HDMI, VGA, and audio-out as a standard connection option. However, it would be smart to get wireless connectivity like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi so that you can stream content or audio from your phone or laptop.

Main Features And Specifications of Pico Projectors

The main features of pico projectors are portable to display presentations and content anywhere. It does not require huge space but can fit into your hand or pocket. These are the smallest and lightest weight projectors and can connect too many devices. It has features that large projectors do not have like you can easily attach your mobile devices to pico and also have a wireless connection, Bluetooth and even USB port.

It is beneficial for business purposes or movie nights and it gives you a large wide screen to see if you have many people to watch. Latest pocket projectors load with the latest Android and iPhone devices which make them very compatible. Most of them have 0.5W built-in speakers as compared to the large 1W speakers which are very bulky and very difficult to carry around.

With the latest LEDs which make the image produced very bright and functional as compared to large projectors. Pico projectors have high definition viewing and are very versatile to use and produce images with good contrast and sharp images. By using the best pico projectors, the light loss is considerably low and the light output is very high.

They also have built-in rechargeable batteries, which can be, very useful for traveling. It can be connected with your mobile phones and you can easily see what you saw on your phone on a bigger screen. Their battery can be recharged by the USB interface. The power consumption of these projectors is deficient like 6W. They have a very stable and reliable Li-ion battery which is very comfortable.

While pico projectors have many advantages, there are some disadvantages too. The main disadvantage they have is their brightness which is about (10-100) Lumens, and big business projects require a lot more brightness than this so the room needs to be dark where the pico projectors are being used for the clear images.

Also, have a rechargeable battery but once the battery is recharged it works approximately up to 2 to 3 hours only. Pico projects content up to screen size of 60” diagonal, needs to be kept at a distance to get the size you want and by doing this, the brightness and sharpness of the screen reduce and the image becomes un-focused.

How To Connect Pico Projector To Your Phone, Android or iPhone?

Connecting your pico projector to the phone is not that hard. Simply plug HDMI and turn it on. It’s simple is that we also have a complete video of how to connect a projector.

What Includes In Pico Projector?

A pico projector contains a rechargeable battery, image processor Micro-controller, the light source for example LED or laser diodes, optics either Di-chromatic Mirrors or Projection Lenses and Digital Micro-mirror Device or scanning mirrors.

Types Of Pico Projectors

A pico projector contains three leading technologies DLP ( Digital Light Processing), LCoS ( Liquid Crystal on Silicon) and LBS (Laser Beam Steering).

DLP Projectors: DLP contains technology using micro-mirror. It has reflective imagining and contains RGB color delivered sequentially.

LCoS Projectors: LCoS contains the same features as DLP but LBS contains Image scanning technology using directed laser beams and RGB color delivered simultaneously. By using DLP, the image is created by microscopically small mirrors and the mirrors are in the digital micromirror device. Each mirror displays one or more pixels in the projected content.

The DLPs that are used in pico projectors are LED-based. LCoS contains micro-projection technology that uses liquid crystals and it works by opening and closing liquid crystals.  They basically control how much light each pixel gets by a tiny LCD. It can be done by color filter (CF-LCoS) which uses 3 sub-pixels with the help of primary colors and Field Sequential Color (FSC-LCoS) which uses the dynamic color filter and gives more refreshing colors.

LBS Projectors: LBS uses laser beams to generate pixel pulses and it has MEMS scanning mirror directs the beam of light. In LBS all visible colors can be produced. It uses 3 types of primary-colored lasers that are joint using optics and guided using mirrors to create a sharp image. The image is scanned at 60Hz.

It is only used by micro vision projectors and they are expensive as compared to its other parts but it is much better in size and power consumption. The best example of DLP is Optoma PK101 which has an approximate price of $179-$210. It has a lamp life of 20k (hr) and its brightness is 11 ANSI and the speaker is of 0.5m. It has a weight of 0.1kg and the size is 50 centimeters and has a battery life of 2 hours.

Why Trust Us?

We researched and tested mini projectors for more than 25 hours to compare these tiny, useful devices. In our evaluation we looked at a multitude of data points including image quality, audio quality, connectivity options, size and weight. We tested each device in a variety of lighting scenarios and pushed their playback and connectivity abilities so we could recommend the best mini projectors for various uses.

How We Tested

For hands-on testing, we used each mini projector in controlled environments meant to simulate real-world situations. We looked at picture quality and brightness both in dark rooms and areas with ambient light. We judged each projector’s ability to produce true colors and a picture that isn’t muddy. We also evaluated the picture focus and keystone adjustment abilities for each projector, as well as how easy it was to set them up and interact with them.

We also checked the audio quality and discovered it was lacking in one way or another for every mini projector we tested. If you’re watching videos, we recommend connecting to your own set of speakers either through an auxiliary cord or Bluetooth in order to have the best possible experience. However, given their small size, their sound overall is good enough, certainly for a presentation on the go.

Finally, with all the products in our review we looked at the user ratings for these devices to see what people thought of them after extended use. Testing a projector for a week is one thing, but knowing what these devices are like to live with provides valuable insight into the product quality and longevity.

How Much Do Mini Projectors Cost?

Though dedicated high-end projectors can cost thousands of dollars, you can get a mini projector between $70 and $600. The low end of this price bracket has really come down in the past few years, and you can get a lot of the same specs and features as much more expensive models in budget projectors.

The best projectors out there will still cost you a pretty penny though, so if you’re looking for something with a native 1080p resolution and powerful lamp that can operate comfortably in daylight hours, expect to spend upwards of $400.

Key Features to Look for When Buying Mini Projectors

Brightness & Picture Quality

Most mini projectors are built around either laser or LED projection hardware. While both have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to image quality, their differences illustrate the importance of brightness. If you project in a non-traditional environment like outside or during the daytime with lots of ambient light in the room, you need a bright projector to create a clear picture. Projectors that have brightness ratings of at least 250 lumens display usable media in most viewing environments.

Technical image quality plays an equally significant role in your viewing experience. During our testing, we evaluated each projector’s color accuracy by measuring how well each one rendered a variety of colors. While laser-based projectors tend to have low brightness ratings, their high-quality hardware has some advantages over that of traditional LED pico projectors. During our picture quality testing, the laser mini projectors we reviewed had substantially better color accuracy marks than competing LED models.

Also look for projectors with a good contrast ratio of at least 1,500:1. The contrast ratio is the number of gradients between white and black colors. For example, if you’re watching a movie and there’s a dark scene at night or in a dim basement, on a projector with a low contrast ratio it’ll just look all black, without much detail. However, the same scene on a device with a high contrast ratio will show you different gradients of black, meaning you’ll see more detail.

Image resolution

As with computers and TVs, each projector is built with a default resolution. Default resolution varies by projector but is usually comparable to a standard- or high-definition television. Most low-resolution projectors can still display HD content like Blu-ray movies and video games, but because the image has to be downsized, image quality generally steps back.

Image Focusing

Good projectors should have a keystone adjustment option, which automatically “straightens” the image out if you’re projecting to a display at an awkward angle. Most projectors automatically detect and correct for the projection angle, but some require manual adjustment.

Projectors also require you to focus the picture that’s projecting. If you’re planning on leaving the projector in the same spot, you won’t have to adjust this often beyond the initial adjustment unless it gets bumped. If you’re constantly moving the projector around – on vacation, for instance – you’ll need to adjust each time you move it. These projectors have a focus wheel you can slide with your thumb to adjust. Again, it’s part of having a projector instead of a TV, but it’s easy and quick to adjust.

Sound Quality

In our hands-on testing, we found audio fidelity is rarely a strength for mini projectors. Because of their small stature, these projectors often have to rely on a single low-powered speaker for audio. While high-end models can usually reach high volumes, the audio quality is often thin and poorly defined. Most mini projectors come with 3.5mm audio output or Bluetooth connectivity, so they can connect to external speakers for better sound quality. This can be a hassle for travelers, however.

Room Sizes & Throw Distance

If you plan to frequently move your projector around your home or office, make sure you know the projector’s throw specifications. The throw ratio determines screen size range and is calculated by dividing how far the projector is from the screen by the width of the projected image.

Projectors with small throw ratios, such as those that have 1:1 ratio or lower, display large images when close to the surface you project on, while large-ratio models need to be farther away to create a large display. The ideal throw ratio depends on where you plan to use the projector.

Battery Life

By size alone, a mini projector is much more portable than the larger dedicated units you see in a home theatre. The inclusion of a battery on many small projectors makes them extra portable. If you’re moving from office to office with the projector, or are always on the go, you probably want one with lengthy battery life. Average projectors have batteries that last between one and two hours while high-end models can go for up to 2.5 hours.

Connectivity

Home users usually only need an HDMI port, but business users benefit from projectors with multiple connection options. If you’re moving between offices or businesses, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll be connecting to a device with modern inputs and outputs. Along with standards like HDMI, business-friendly mini projectors feature options like VGA ports and audio output. A USB port and a microSD slot are nice to have as well, as they allow you to access content from a wider variety of sources.

Some more expensive projectors will also have WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity options, so you can wireless connect them to devices like smartphones and tablets. None of the projectors we tested had every single port option we consider to be important, so make sure you know what connection options you need before buying your mini projector.

What to watch on your mini projector?

Once you’ve chosen your mini projector and have it set up in your home theater – or your car, bedroom or tent – the next task is to find something to watch. Luckily, you can watch anything on your mini projector as long as it’s hooked up properly, including movies and shows from the best TV streaming services (though you’ll obviously need to be somewhere with a reliable internet connection for that).

Some mini projectors also have a small amount of internal storage. For some, this means you can download a video or two to watch, no matter how far away you are from a WiFi signal. Other pico projectors use this small space for streaming apps – these projectors allow you to download and install your favorite apps, such as those for Netflix, HBO or ESPN. From here, as long as you’re connected to the internet, you can watch anything available on the apps.

If your projector has a compatible port, you can also connect an external hard drive, flash drive or your computer to view anything those devices have on them or can access online. This is handy if you have your work presentation stored online or if you just want to have a Netflix marathon while you’re camping by the beach.

You can even hook your mini projector up to a video games console for some big screen gaming. There might be some slight input lag, but for most party or group multiplayer games, this won’t be an issue.

Remember, though, because of how small they are, these projectors don’t have terrific battery life. If you plan on using yours heavily, we recommend keeping it plugged into a power source like a wall socket or portable battery brick. That way, you don’t have to worry about the battery dying during your favorite movie scene.

Useful terms

For portable Projectors, you will not get a similar parameter as you can in the standard projector. They are designed so compactly so that you can carry it anywhere. For that, there is some trade-off for choosing a compact design instead of a bulkier one.

Brightness

The unit which is used to measures brightness is lumens and represented as lm. In simpler terms, it just measures of entire light emitted by the source.

But Different company’s (mostly Chinese company’s)
use there on brightness measuring scale to indicate the brightness intensity of the projector that is also in lumens, which is very confusing.

The most trusted criteria which standard brands are using is ANSI lumens. The full form of ANSI (American National Standards Institute).

ANSI lumen is measuring lumen as stipulated by the ANSI standardization. Thus, it is more specific and accurate for determining the brightness of the projector.
The bottom line, its higher number indicates a higher brightness level.

Resolution

Resolution is the number of pixels displayed on the screen ,

and can also be expressed as a number of pixels on the horizontal axis to the number of pixels on the vertical axis.

The sharpness of the picture depends on the size of the screen. You will get a sharp image when the same number of pixels projected on a smaller screen, and the image starts losing its sharpness as screen size increases.

The resolution which these portable projectors are capable of projecting.

854 x 480 which is 480p

1280 x 720 which is 720p

The main term to focus on the resolution is a native resolution because this is the actual resolution size for which the projector designed.

Well, the device can also project various other screen size resolutions like full HD (1920 x 1080)

by up-scaling or down-scaling the input content,

but they perform best when provided with native resolution content.

Contrast ratio

It is the measure of how black is black as compared to white or in other words, the difference between darkest pixel to lightest pixel.
That means if their difference is very less, then you will not be able to observe the aliveness of various colors.

Conclusion

We have the best Pico projectors that deliver high-quality viewing. You can use indoors and outdoors for multiple things such as movie watching, football games, and much more. Pick one that will help you enhance your entertainment and business meeting for a presentation.
