What is an inverter?

In straightforward terms, an inverter is a device that converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC).

Usually, all our appliances at home run on AC. The inverter comes with a battery that stores electricity.

During a power cut, the inverter system starts converting the stored DC from the battery into AC and resumes the electricity supply. It ensures that you can work unhindered even during the absence of regular AC supply from the mains.

Usually, you find inverters coming with specifications like 800VA, 1000VA, 1200VA and so on. The batteries come with configurations like 150ah, 200ah, and so on. What do these numbers signify? We shall discuss these aspects in detail.

You have various electrical appliances at home. Let us now look at the regular electricity consumption of the common electrical appliances you find in every house.

We have listed out almost all the appliances we use daily. You have other devices like your water heaters, water purifiers, refrigerators, and air conditioners. These appliances are high consumers of electricity. Hence, people usually do not connect them to the inverters.

You will not use all these appliances at the same time. Assume you wish to use one CFL bulb, one fan, one tube light, and one LCD TV during a power failure situation. These appliances will consume approximately 275 to 300 watts.

Now, you need this backup to be available for say 4 hours. Therefore, you will need to store 1.1 to 1.2 kWh of electricity (units of power).

Know how to calculate the VA rating of the inverter

The thumb rule is that you divide the total required load in watts by 0.8 to arrive at the VA value.

In our case, it would be around 343 VA to 375 VA. This figure will be your maximum inverter load. Now, you will not get an inverter with exactly the VA value you want.

You should go for the next higher round figure. In our example, you can safely select a 400 VA inverter.

Remember, you need to calculate your exact requirements. It is always better to choose higher values as you could end up with an inverter of higher capacity. It will cost you more but will give you better backup.

Which is the right battery to choose?

The capacity of the battery also depends on the load and the duration of the backup. In our example, we have opted for a 400 VA inverter. We need the backup for 4 hours. Thus, we would need a VAh value of 1600.

The batteries available on the market are of 12 Volts. Therefore, you arrive at the Ah value of 33. Inverter batteries come with Ah values such as 100, 120, 150, 200, and so on.

In our case, a 100 Ah battery would suffice. It is better to go for a higher configuration as a matter of abundant precaution.

How do you handle the bigger appliances?

We know that you have a question at the back of your mind. How should you handle Air Conditioners and refrigerators? Power consumption wise, the refrigerator would consume an average of 300 to 350 watts.

The compressor in the conventional refrigerator does not work on a continuous basis. It stops and starts depending on the cooling requirements. The fridges require a lot of electric power to start.

The ideal inverter should be the 2.5 KVA for your refrigerator. Overall, your fridge consumes around two units of electricity per day. Hence, you need an inverter of higher capacity whereas a small battery will suffice for powering your fridge.

The AC units are also similar in their functioning to the fridge. The compressor constantly switches between the start and stop. As AC units consume more power than the refrigerator, you need a 3.5 KVA inverter along with multiple batteries or battery with a high Ah value.

Therefore, people do not connect the inverter to the AC or the refrigerator.

Different types of inverters

There are three different categories of inverters available on the market.

Sine Wave Inverter

The sine wave inverters have a rotating AC machinery to generate power. As most of our electrical appliances are compatible for operation on sine waves, it is better to select a sine wave inverter for your home.

Remember that these inverters are the most expensive of the lot, but they are ideal for catering to heavy loads.

Modified Sine Wave Inverter

In a modified sine wave inverter, the waveform is more like a square. Such an inverter can also work with most of the electrical appliances, but it can reduce the efficiency of the device.

Therefore, you might hear a humming or buzzing sound. You would also experience the fluorescent lighting to be dimmer than they usually are. As compared to the sine wave inverter, the modified sine wave inverters are affordable.

Square Wave Inverter

The square wave inverters are the cheapest of the lot. They are also the inverters with the least efficiency. Not all electrical appliances work with these square wave inverters.

Hence, they are not as popular as the inverters discussed above.

Different types of batteries

Just as there are different types of inverters, you have three categories of batteries. These batteries vary depending on the internal technology used to store the current. The three types of batteries available today are as follows.

Flat Plate Battery

These are the first-generation lead-acid batteries. These batteries have two electrodes immersed in an electrolytic solution of sulphuric acid and water.

The negative electrode consists of a porous lead whereas the positive electrode is made of lead oxide. These are lightweight batteries costing in the range of around ₹ 9000 to ₹ 15000. The only disadvantage is that they require regular maintenance.

You need to replenish distilled water every three or six months depending on its usage. Delaying this top-up can damage the battery and reduce its life. Secondly, these batteries emit noxious gases whereby you need to place them in areas having sufficient ventilation.

Nowadays, these batteries are becoming outdated with the tubular batteries replacing them.

Tubular Battery

The tubular battery is an improvement over the flat plate battery. These batteries last longer than the flat plate batteries as they come with a battery life of around five years.

The reason for their efficiency is the deep charging cycles and relatively less maintenance. These batteries have tubes protected by a cloth in place of the positive lead oxide plates.

Costs wise, the tubular batter is expensive in comparison to the flat plate batteries as they come in a range of ₹ 9000 to ₹ 25000.

Sealed Maintenance Free Battery

The name explains it all. These batteries do not require any maintenance. The nature of the electrodes used is such that there is no need for replenishing with distilled water.

These batteries are the safest of the lot as they do not emit obnoxious gases. These batteries are also referred to as VRLA (Value Regulated Lead Acid) batteries. These batteries are expensive as compared to the other two categories discussed above.

They have a shorter life as well in comparison.

If you compare the various features side-by-side, the tubular batteries are the most popular of the three.

Difference between an inverter and the UPS

The fundamental functions of the inverter and the UPS are the same. However, there are minor differences. When there is a power cut, there is a need to switch over from the main line to the battery power.

The inverter takes around 100 milliseconds whereas the UPS would do the switch in 3 to 5 milliseconds. Therefore, you get almost uninterrupted power supply in a UPS system.

Specific appliances like your desktop PC can switch off even if there is no power supply for a few milliseconds. Hence, you have to use the UPS instead of the inverter to ensure that the PC does not switch off during a power cut.

There are two types of UPS, the online UPS, and the off-line UPS. The difference is that the online UPS supplies power continuously from the battery even when the mains line is on. It recharges the batteries simultaneously.

Therefore, there is no loss of power even for a single millisecond. On the other hand, the offline UPS uses the battery power only when there is a power cut. At other times, it uses the main power line.
