What is a Wine Chiller?

A wine fridge or Wine Cooler is a compact size storage appliance for storing wine or any chilled beverage. The wines stored in this fridge gradually mature hat enhances their taste. There is a varied type of Wine fridge available online depending upon their technology. Mainly there are two types of technology used to operate a wine fridge:

1. Thermoelectric Wine Chillers-

The thermoelectric wine chillers are made of two different the electrolyzed metal conductors that create a temperature difference where the cool end of the rod is directed in the interior and hot end at the outer end. An interior fan distributes coolness in the entire compartment. These type of wine chillers is kept with ventilation space and only good with small units and works great in for mild hot weather.

2. Compressor based Chillers-

Just like any other standard refrigerator, the working of a compressor wine chiller is based on the compressor cycle that involves compression of air in the fridge chambers. These wine chambers keep the wine cooler for a longer time but can be heavier and of a high-end than a thermoelectric unit.

There are various types of wine fridge designs like the countertop wine chillersingle-zone wine chillerdual-zone wine chiller, and freestanding wine chillers.

How to Choose a Wine Cooler that Suits You?

First off, you should decide on the type of cooler that you want to buy.

  • Single Zone Cooling
Wine refrigerators with single zone cooling only have one cooling area and one temperature control. Perfect for starters and people who prefer only red wine or only white wine.
  • Dual-Zone Cooling
Dual-zone coolers are for those who have a growing wine collection and/or like both red and white wines. They’re a little more expensive, but not that much more.
  • Built-In Wine Coolers
Ventilation for these coolers is such that you can perfectly integrate them with your kitchen cabinets. Great for design purists and anyone who wants to add a touch of class to their kitchen or bar area.

If you’re about to buy your first wine cooler, I would recommend choosing a small single zone fridge. They’re not very expensive and the perfect way to determine if you’re serious about cooling wine appropriately.

Types Of Wine Coolers

Wine coolers often vary in terms of their design, construction, storage capacity, as well as the overall cooling system. Further, they are classified into four main categories on the basis of the technology used, as well as the construct of the cooler itself.

1. Technology

When you speak about the technology used in any type of wine cooler, you are actually referring to the cooling system of it. Under the basis of the technology used to manufacture the wine cooler, there are two main types of wine coolers: thermoelectric and compressor wine coolers.

1. Thermoelectric Wine Coolers

The first type of wine coolers under the technical aspect is the thermoelectric coolers. These types of wine coolers depend upon the use of an electric current.

Furthermore, if you take a closer look at the design of such a type of wine cooler, you are going to most likely notice a metal rod. This rod is electrolyzed, and a temperature differential is created.

In addition to the above, one part of the metal is heated, whereas the other side is cooled. This is a continuous cycle to make sure that there is sufficient cooling and air ventilation throughout the entire cooler.

Moreover, thermoelectric coolers do have their own set of advantages as well as drawbacks, which need to be analyzed thoroughly when purchasing the best wine cooler.

Firstly, they are relatively quieter when compared to compressor wine coolers. Further, as there are no moving parts in the cooler, the taste and the overall quality is enhanced and preserved.

Another great advantage of these types of wine coolers is that they are energy efficient. They use fewer amounts of electricity, and hence, are known to be environmentally friendly.

It is important to note that these types of wine coolers function on the principle of the Peltier effect. Thus, with this, the temperature inside the wine cooler automatically adjusts itself, leading to its effectiveness and efficiency.

However, thermoelectric wine coolers are highly impacted by external conditions. For example, if you place them in a hotter area of your house, then the internal cooling is drastically impacted.

Furthermore, these types of wine coolers take time to chill your wine bottles. Thus, due to this, it is recommended to place your wine bottles beforehand to ensure a cold glass of wine.

Overall, if you want an energy-efficient cooler, then try looking at various thermoelectric wine coolers.

2. Compressor Wine Coolers

The next type of wine cooler is the compressor wine coolers. In simpler terms, a cooler of this type is quite similar to a normal refrigerator.

A typical compressor cooler works by constantly compressing air to remove heat from the inside of the wine cooler.

Fighter, this process is often termed as the vapor compression cycle. With the integration of such technology, the inside of the wine cooler gets cold immediately. However, it should be noted that these types of coolers don’t have any vents at the back of it to release the hot air.

Thus, it is often advisable to place these coolers a few inches away from the wall or any surface, so that the heat escapes and allows for proper ventilation.

In addition to the above, these types of wine coolers are automatic in maintaining and regulating the temperature inside. For example, if the inside of the cooler is warmer, then the machine automatically switches on, to cool it back to the desired temperature.

Similarly, this is the same for the opposite. If the inside is extremely cold, the machine automatically switches off to avoid the over freezing of the wines, and preserve its natural aroma and taste.

One of the biggest perks of these types of coolers is their efficiency. Compressor wine coolers are designed in such a way wherein the temperature is regulated automatically, and in a wider range. This can entirely be preset by the individual according to their collection.

Another great benefit of having such types of wine coolers is that they are renowned for their rapid cooling. Now, you can have a chilled bottle of wine ready to be served in just just one minute.

Also, unlike the thermoelectric wine coolers, compressor coolers are not affected by any change in the external environment.

However, the biggest flaws of these types of wine coolers are that they are noisy.

Due to the inclusion of modern compressor technology, the wine cooler is prone to make vibrations and noises. These vibrations may decrease the longevity of the wine bottles, as they are constantly in contact with each other during the process.

In addition, they require immense amounts of electricity, which may add to the overall expenditure endured by the individual. Moreover, compressor wine coolers are not an ideal choice if you are looking for something that is compact and portable.

Due to the inclusion of various moving parts, the overall weight of the cooler is increased, and cannot be moved without professional assistance.

2. Construction

Wine coolers are also classified on the basis of the overall build and construct of it. They typically come in two main types – single-zone and dual-zone.

1. Single Zone Coolers

As mentioned above, these types of wine coolers are meant only for a single type of wine. They are designed to provide users with a solid, single storage-area.

Furthermore, there is a single temperature that is spread throughout the cooler. This way, all your wine bottles will be at the same temperature.

Single-zone coolers are a great tool to help you start your wine collection, especially if you are a beginner. Moreover, these types of coolers are inexpensive–a great fit for a single-wine enthusiast.

2. Dual Zone Coolers

On the contrary, wine coolers are also designed with multiple cooling areas. These are often termed as dual-zone coolers. If you were to take a look at a dual-zone cooler, you are likely to notice that there are a minimum of two compartments. These can be used to store the different types of wine you have in your collection.

However, the only negative of using such types of coolers is that they are expensive. As they are quite bulky in size, they need professional expertise to help you to assemble it, and thus, cannot be shifted constantly.

In a nutshell, if you are planning to purchase a good quality and one of the best home wine coolers, then try looking and sorting through your collection.

This will give a clearer idea of the kinds of wine you have, and help you to get the most effective product to suit your requirements.

How To Clean Your Wine Cooler

When you buy the best rated wine refrigerator or the best wine chiller, it is your responsibility to clean it and maintain it. This will help you to increase the shelf life of the wine cooler, and provide you with a tastier, delicious wine.

By following these simple tips and tricks, you can ensure a thorough cleanse of the interiors as well as the exteriors of your wine cooler.

Step # 1) Unplug Your Cooler

The first step in maintaining your cooler would be to unplug it from the electric power source. This is because when liquids come in contact with electricity, it tends to be a hazardous situation for the individual due to the possibility of an electric shock.

Thus, make sure to remove it from the power socket to switch it off before you start cleaning it.

Step # 2) Take Out Your Wine Bottles

Once you have unplugged your wine cooler, the next step would be to gently and carefully remove the bottles from the shelves of the cooler. Once you take them out, it is advisable to place them in a safe and secure area to ensure no damage is caused to the bottles.

Step # 3) Detach Shelves

The next step in cleaning and maintaining your wine cooler is to remove the shelving units. If your wine cooler is not built-in with adjustable shelves, then you can clean them while they are still in the cooler.

However, if you can detach them, then you would have more space to clean all the regions of the wine cooler.

Once you are done removing the shelving units, the next thing for you to do would be to use a damp, soft cloth and wipe the wine racks down. A great example of such types of cloth would be a Microfiber cloth.

The main purpose of the cloth is to carefully and gently remove any residue or dust particles inside the racks as well as the wine cooler unit itself.

Step # 4) Tackle Foul Odor

Sometimes your wine cooler may start to smell musty. This may be due to any spillage of the wine, etc. Thus, in order to get rid of such foul smells, all you have to do is take a damp cloth and soak it in white vinegar for a couple of minutes.

Once this is done, squeeze the excess solution from the cloth, and wipe the interiors of your wine cooler. However, make sure to leave the door open, so that the strong smell from the vinegar can escape, and prevent any hindrances in the taste of the wine in the future.

Step # 5) Install The Racks

Once the inside of your wine cooler is cleaned, the next step would be to put back the shelves according to the hinges. Make sure to check if they are stable and rigid, before placing your wine bottles on them.

Step # 6) Clean The Outside Glass

As the cleaning of the inside of the wine cooler is complete, your next priority would be to tackle the outside. Try removing any smudges on the glass panes either with a glass cleaner or a damp Microfiber cloth.

If you are planning to remove any smudges on the stainless steel body of the wine cooler, it is recommended to use specific cleaners or natural substances such as olive oils.

This will help you to remove any marks, while, at the same time, ensuring a shiny product all the way through!

Step # 7) Clean Coils And Vents

Now that the inside and outside are perfectly clean, the next step would be to clean the vents and coils present in the back of the wine cooler. To do this, you can use either a brush tool or a vacuum cleaner to reeve any debris and dust particles present on the surface.

Step # 8) Power It On

The last step is to connect your wine cooler back to the power source and start chilling your favorite bottles of wine.

Maintaining Your Wine Cooler

After you have chosen the best wine cooler, the next step would be to learn how to maintain it. It is important to note that maintaining your wine cooler can increase its overall effectiveness and efficiency.

Below are a few tips and tricks that will guide you to properly maintain your wine cooler.

Tip # 1) Proper Placement

When purchasing the best wine refrigerators or the best wine cabinets, you first need to decide where you want to keep it. It is recommended to place your wine cooler on a stable, flat surface.

Make sure you avoid any carpets. This is because in case you drop or spill some of your wine on the carpet, the cleaning process becomes quite difficult and expensive.

However, if you don’t have a flat surface designated for your wine cooler, then you can try to purchase a good quality placemat. This will not only create a stable surface but also catch any spillage or drops of wine. In return, the cleaning process is much easier than just a plain carpet.

Tip # 2) Resolve Any Condensation Problems

Due to the differences in temperature and humidity levels between the inside and the outside of your wine cooler, you may tend to see some condensation droplets formed on the outside.

This is rarely a problem. However, in the case of excessive moisture, condensation can sometimes form inside the wine cooler.

Thus, in order to reduce this, all you have to do is place silica pearls or an open container of baking soda inside the cooler. This will capture and absorb the excessive amounts of moisture present.

Tip # 3) Drip Tray

The last but not the least tip of maintaining your wine cooler is to keep checking the drip tray of your cooler at regular intervals. Almost all types of wine coolers come included with a reservoir to collect the excess water.

This water is not typically a hindrance for many people. However, it should be highlighted that the water may have a foul smell to it that is quite displeasing.

Thus, make sure to clean your drip tray at regular intervals to maintain a clean, tidy environment when storing your wine.

What Is The Best Capacity Wine Refrigerator?

An 8 bottle countertop cooler is the best choice if you just need something basic. Most people find six to be a little limiting.

For those who don’t have a lot of space, or just like to have a decent selection of wine on hand, coolers that hold 12 to 24 bottles will suffice.

If you’re the type that likes to spend a little time picking up great wines and storing them for the longer term, consider something that holds 24 bottles or more

For the true connoisseur, the entertainer, the bulk buyer and those who just drink a lot, have a look at the best wine coolers that hold at least 40 bottles.

Is the Best Wine Refrigerator a Single or Dual Zone Cooler?

  • A single zone wine refrigerator has one compartment where all the wine is stored at the same temperature.

These are cheaper and suited for either white or red wine if you want wines on hand at a convenient temperature, or if you want to store a select amount of wine for a longer period of time

If you want to mix reds and whites in a single zone you can, and the best temperature for this is 55℉. This also means you have to rest your red wine for longer before serving, or put your white in the food refrigerator for a while after opening.

  • A dual zone wine refrigerator has two units with independently controlled temperatures.

These are recommended if you want to conveniently store both reds and whites, and if you want whites and light bodied reds ready on hand to serve

Dual zones are of course more pricey, and they may or may not be divided into two equal halves. The cooler, upper zone meant for whites is often smaller. The zones are not interchangeable because both have a fixed range of higher and lower temperatures.

What is The Best Temperature Range For a Wine Refrigerator?

Lower priced models will have a narrower temperature range, especially for the lower range. The average wine cooler is not designed to accommodate larger sparkling wines, therefore the lowest temperature is often only 45°or 46℉.

If you want champagne, rose, or young crisp white wines chilled on hand, it’s better to go with a compressor model rather than a thermoelectric cooler. These and more expensive but generally have a low temperature of 40°or 41℉.

For most wine refrigerators, the highest temperature range of almost all coolers is between 64°or 66℉. A few go as high as 68℉ which is the highest suggested serving temperature for bold reds, although keeping your reds at 65℉ is best.

With some dual zone refrigerators the highest range of the cooler upper zone is the same as the warmer lower zone which means that both zones can be used to store just red wines.

What Else Do I Need to Know About?

Wine coolers are quite basic appliances so when choosing the best wine refrigerator for your needs, there aren’t too many additional things to take into account.

1. Shelving

Classic looking wine refrigerators with stainless steel exteriors and wooden shelves cost more. Thermoelectric models often have cheaper non stainless exteriors, sometimes also with cheaper metal shelves.

Adjustable shelves are nice especially if you need a little extra height for wines like chardonnay or Burgundy. Not a lot of coolers have adjustable rack slots, but at least check to see the cooler has removable shelves.

2. Lighting

For the most part, medium-sized and larger wine coolers will have a blue LED light. Often there are two levels of lighting— bright for reading labels and soft ambient to show off your wines when you want to. Unfortunately LCD display lights for the temperature readings cannot be switched off, so this can be an irritation especially if you want to put the cooler in a room used for sleeping.

3. Locks

Finally, you may want a lock for your wine cooler. Higher grade models and built-in wine refrigerators will almost always have these, but for other grades of coolers always check.

Features to consider before buying a Wine Fridge in India

1. Type of Wine Cooler-

As mentioned above, you can choose a wine fridge according to their various kinds. In case you prefer drinking your wine instead of storing them for a more extended period than you need a countertop wine chiller. For more storage space, you can go for a free-standing wine chiller. A dual-zone will be perfect for storing different types and qualities of beverages.

2. Storage capacity-

Its good to buy a wine fridge as per its storage capacity, a good storage wine fridge is the one that can store at least 12 to 15 bottles at one go.

3. Energy Efficiency-

The advance Wine Fridge is more energy-efficient, so buy the wine cooler from the brand that mentions Energy star rating, although. People who enjoy their wine every day they should look for an energy-efficient one.

4. Additional features-

Some essential features can make the wine cooler a better buying investment; features like touch screen, digital temperature display, or LED light can ensure smooth user control.

5. Temperature adjustment control-

It will be convenient if you choose a wine fridge that gives a temperature controlling option so you can adjust the temperature of different beverages according to their need.

THERE ARE A FEW COMMON THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HAVING A WINE

To ensure that wine can retain flavor and balance, it must be stored at the right temperature. The wrong temperature can shorten the life of the alcohol.

Alcohol preservation is an uncommon and confusing topic. Nearly all alcohol experts recommend storing wine between 52-55 degrees, but when you have a wide variety of wines, how to determine the right temperature for each bottle is a very challenging task.
One thing you should know is. If the temperature fluctuates around 10 degrees, your collection will age twice as fast, which reminds you of paying more attention to the temperature issue.

WHAT TYPES OF WINES DO YOU HAVE?

You should clearly identify the type of wine you want to keep because each type needs its own temperature for storage. We will list each of them below for easy viewing!

RED WINE

Red wine is the most popular but the least hostile. It is the common wine in the vast majority of meetings or parties. The ideal temperature for which it should be stored is between 50 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. It is common knowledge that red wine is best served at room temperature. However, it will taste better when served cold.
When you want to enjoy red wine, let it cool slowly on the table.

SPARKLING WINE

Sparkling wine should be enjoyed cold as ice and adjusted to temperature range of around 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit. At that time, the bubbles will still be smooth instead of frothy as are often seen.

Similarly, sparkling wines should be chilled, for at least an hour before serving. For longer period, the temperature may affect its quality. If you need to take wine in less than an hour, simply get a bucket of ice, and then soak in it for half an hour. The result will be similar. When you drink sparkling wine, you can feel that it is kept cold at all times.

WHITE WINE

Slightly different from the ones above, rose wine and white wine should be served cold and best stored at between 45 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. For the maximal stability, remember to put your wine in the wine cooler right after buying the wine. If you want to indulge yourself in meals, leave the wine in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving.
During the party, it is not necessary to return the bottle to the bin. Instead, keep your wine bottle sitting on the table and let it get out of sweat. The aroma and richness can vary widely due to the high temperature, but the change will give a very pleasant taste.

WHERE DO YOU STORE YOUR WINE?

Now that you know the ideal temperature to store your wines, we now talk about some effective ways to keep the quality of the flavor of your drink intact. They are as follows:

Wine cellar

Since ancient times the cellar has been considered the optimal choice for any wine bottle. The cellar is easy to control temperature and humidity effectively. Furthermore, it makes sense because you can arrange the bottles in different ways or by the origin or date of the wine.

Closet cellar

If you are a wine enthusiast, but not yet capable, you can learn about a temporary cellar. It is quite convenient and easy to make for storing wine bottles of any size. There are plenty of tutorials available on YouTube to guide you on how to make your temporary cellar.

The downside to a cellar is that it is difficult to control temperature and humidity. It is not a bad choice for a daily drinker, but will not be suitable for long-term storage

Conclusion

With the right wine cooler, you’ll be able to perfectly store and chill your precious wines.

A thermoelectric wine cooler gives you the chance to do this in an environmentally friendly and convenient way. While the models aren’t the best for serious wine enthusiasts, they make a great addition to any casual drinking household.

In the other hand, traditional compressor models are fit for more wine enthusiasts.

Because I consider myself a wine enthusiast and because there’s much more offer to choose from, I’ve chosen the compressor model Merax 24 Bottle Wine Cooler (Amazon link). I am currently building my new office, and this model suits perfectly with the space: small and sophisticated.

Also, despite its size, this compact unit has a decent capacity, which it is exactly what I was looking for.

So, what’s going to be: thermoelectric or compressor?
